The most two common profession nowadays are engineering and medical. For every student in today’s world, the benchmark is to become an engineer or a doctor. Of course, there are exceptions – like someone from an economically disadvantaged background who cannot afford such courses or others who choose government jobs.
The life of a child starts from the day they are born, when they learn to stand, to walk, to run, to climb and much more. Then, they have to choose their career. Most parents wish for their child to become a doctor or an engineer.
When some choose engineering, they are asked to join a foundation course. After completing the foundation course, some manage to get admission in IITs or NITs. But many fail as well. Then there are the government and top private colleges. After getting admission in any private engineering college, several hurdles arise. Although all private colleges are not bad, some are badly affected by unemployment in India. These colleges take advantage of unemployment and make very bad use of it.
Nowadays, the biggest problem in engineering is unemployment. Perhaps students are also responsible for this. Are we doing our moral duties on the ground level? In my opinion, no. We have become habituated to easiness and we want everything to be ready-made for us. We don’t want to work. There is a rush for government jobs because they can be obtained the easy way.
The same pattern is being followed in studies. If we look at the syllabus of an engineering course, it is one of the toughest. But study material like “Quantum” has made it easy to gain enough marks to pass. This trend of just passing or obtaining high marks without understanding basic concepts is also very dangerous. During the time of placement, we have to compete with various degree holders. We need to be able to differentiate our talent from that of others in order to stand out.
In my opinion, most students are studying these courses just for degrees. When they are asked what they will do in the future, they aren’t quite sure how to answer. According to me, one must do what they want to do. Not engage in tasks just because others are doing it too. We need to give our best in the area that interests us.
Finding out our true area of interest will prevent us from hearing jibes like, “Sharma ji ka launda engineering kar ke baitha hai (Mr. Sharma’s son is just sitting around after doing engineering).” If we would have devoted our time to our area of interest, then we would be enjoying our jobs and also achieving greater success.
