Mumbai University’s System Of Calculating Results Is Costing Me My Career

I am an engineering student studying in a college affiliated to the University of Mumbai. I am applying for jobs in various companies, both in the government and private sectors. Obviously, wherever I have applied, I have been asked about the percentage of marks I obtained.

But the problem here is that Mumbai University declares our results in the form of SGPIs or CGPIs and not as percentages. You can not find the percentage of marks obtained anywhere on our mark sheets. They do not even provide the total marks scored in the exams. They just provide the grades and the SGPI/CGPI.

After a lot of effort, they came out with the following useless formula to convert SGPI into percentage – Percentage = (SGPI*7.1)+12. I tried to figure out weather this formula is correct or not, but to the best of my knowledge, even this formula seems to be incorrect. Actually, they put up the total marks obtained in a ‘college sheet’ which we can not use or avail of. On the other hand, the score cards we receive contain just the grade and the SGPI.

In one semester, I saw that I had scored 485 out of 800 (according to the ‘college sheet’) which turns out to be 60.60%. In my grade card however, they had given me an SGPI of 6.71. Then I used their formula to convert SGPI into percentage.

Percentage = (SGPI*7.1)+12

Percentage = (6.71*7.1)+12

Percentage = 59.6

On the other hand, according to overall marks, I should have scored 60.60%. But, due to this useless formula used by the Mumbai University, my percentage gets reduced to 59.6% – which is in fact a huge difference. Even this difference of 1% affects our career!

I don’t know why the hell they are declaring our results in the form of SGPIs and are spoiling our careers. Even when we take admission there, they ask for the percentage of marks we have received in our diploma. But, since they declare the results in the form of SGPIs, this creates a huge confusion.

I am applying for job in so many places, but I can’t even provide the real percentage I have obtained. Mumbai University is truly hellish. Even though it requires a lot of time and effort to calculate SGPI, I dont know why they are wasting their efforts and our brains and futures in this utter farce.
