Aligarh Muslim University Students Union (AMUSU) has historically been an apolitical union. The primary motive of the union has always been to fight for the sake of justice and for the legal issues of the students. Yet, the tradition was broken when president Faizul Hasan and honorary secretary Nabeel Usmani of Aligarh Muslim University Students Union publicly announced their support for the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and appealed to the Muslim voters to vote for the BSP in a press conference.

The press conference was held on February 9 in Hotel Palm Tree in Aligarh, where both the president and the secretary of AMUSU showed their support for the BSP. It is for the first time in the history of AMUSU that the office bearers are supporting a political party during their tenure.

President Faizul Hasan said, “BSP is the only political party based on Ambedkar’s vision and stands with the oppressed, minorities and other backward classes.”

Showing his support for the BSP, honorary secretary Nabeel Usmani also said, “In this time, when certain ideologies are being imposed on the students, of which Rohith Vemula and Najeeb are victims, BSP is the need of the time. Samajwadi Party is working on the ideologies of RSS and should be kept away from power.”

In reaction to this. the vice-president of AMUSU, Nadeem Ansari, publicly criticised the decision of the president and the secretary. He said, “This is not the tradition of Aligarh Muslim University. AMUSU has never supported any political party in the past. If Faizul Hasan or any other person supports any political party individually, then we don’t have any objection. But if they are campaigning for a political party with the tag of AMUSU, it can’t be tolerated. I’m against this decision and ask for a general body meeting of students to discuss the matter.” He also demanded the resignation of the president and the secretary.

Meanwhile, the cabinet members of the Aligarh Muslim University Students Union are also divided into two groups. Few are with the president and the secretary, while others are supporting the vice-president.
